Residential Roofing

As the term would imply, residential roofing is typically the installation of roofing materials on a residence.  The techniques associated with residential roofing are not always used on homes; some of the techniques also carry over to other types of roofing projects.

Types of residential roofing materials used in Los Angeles and the greater Southern California area include such options as clay, wood, metal, and slate.  Asphalt is also an option for the consumer that wants a low priced roofing alternative.

The mainstay of the Southern California residential roofing look is the Spanish clay tile.  These distinctly red colored tiles have been common in many parts of Southern California since these tiles were first produced.  These red clay tiles were also known as Spanish Mission tiles, and were first manufactured in California at the Mission San Antonio de Padua.  These rounded clay tiles were created using a special type of California clay and were cured over sections of logs.

Wood shake shingles have also been a popular choice for residential roofing matierials throughout history, but have lost favor in recent years.  By the mid 1900s, metal roofs started to gain popularity due to their fire resistant nature, but metal roofs have been around for centuries.

The practice of using slate as a residential roofing material has also been around for some time.  These types of roofs have gained a lot of popularity with the Tudor-style homes that saw a revival in the 1920s, and are still popular today.

But the most common type of residential roofing material for the last several decades has been asphalt shingles.  Asphalt shingles were first seen on roofs in the early 1890s, but new manufacturing technologies have made them popular because of their low cost and ease of installation.

To find out which type of residential roofing material is best for your home, it is best to consult a roofing professional and get an estimate.
