EPDM Membrane

An EPDM membrane is the only type of roofing material recommended for use in water collection systems.  EPMD rubber or ethylene propylene diene M-class rubber is one of the few types of rubber that can be used for roofing projects where it is critical that the water runoff is not polluted.

When setting up most types of green roof projects, a layer of EPDM membrane will be installed to collect any rainwater for use on the green roof.  Whether someone wants to collect rainwater for a green roof or to water harvest for other uses, it is important that the system be designed with an EPDM membrane in mind, especially if the collected water will be used for plant or animal use.

EPDM membrane roofing is installed using a special type of adhesive that is also designed to prevent water contamination.  These adhesives are either applied as a tape that sticks two sheets of EPDM membrane together or as a liquid that bonds the two sheets together on a molecular level

When repairing an EPDM membrane roof there is no need for heavy tools or equipment.  All the tools necessary for a simple repair are some common cleaning tools, a replacement patch, and some adhesive.  Simply clean the area that needs to be repaired to remove any dirt, apply the adhesive, and place the patch over the damaged area.

Of all of the types of roofing materials available, an EPDM membrane might have some of the best features.  Not only can the water runoff be collected for other uses, but an EPDM membrane can withstand all sorts of extreme weather.  High wind and hot temperatures are not a problem for an EPDM membrane roof.  Only temperatures of -45 degrees can cause potential problems, but these temperatures are almost unheard of in Southern California.  As far as protection from sun damage and aging goes, there is no better product on the market.
